Deering High Alumni Directory 2008 -
Mailed November 2008

The Deering High School Alumni Association announces the production of a renewal edition alumni directory. The 2008 edition directory is the most up-to-date reference compiled on Deering High School alumni to date and features detailed personal and professional information on graduates from all class years—making it easier to find old friends as well as to network professionally.  The next edition will be published in 2012.

The 2008 Alumni Directory project was coordinated and distributed by our publisher, Harris Directory and Data Services of Norfolk, VA.  Harris Publishing made every attempt to contact individuals directly to verify information through postcards mailings, email messages and phone calls.  Thank you to all those alumni who contacted Harris to confirm or update their information.  The final product was mailed in November 2008.  Please call Harris/Graduation Connections directly toll-free at 1-800-877-6554 if you have any questions or at their web site at
www.graduateconnections.com/deering

If your directory listing was incorrect, please let us know and we will update your class list.

Alumnus Organizes Program to Teach Deering Students about Design and Construction Careers

About a dozen Deering High School students are learning about architecture, engineering and construction careers through a new mentoring program started at the school by an alumnus.

Students in the ACE Mentoring Program meet regularly with professionals in those fields and visit building projects such as the Ocean Avenue Elementary School now under construction. At the end of the year, students in the program will have the opportunity to win scholarships.

The students are designing a community center for the Pines area behind Deering High School. Although the center won't actually be built, "it's a great exercise to get students to be creative," said Tyler Johnson, a 2002 Deering graduate who works as an intern architect at WBRC Architects/Engineers. "We have asked them to look at successful community centers and think about what they would want in a building right near their school for a great place to hang out."

Johnson said the ACE Mentoring Program would have been perfect for him when he was in high school. He approached Deering last year about offering it, he said, because "I wanted to help guide students and work with them to figure out if architecture, engineering or construction is the route they want to take." Johnson is one of several professionals in the construction field who interact with students as mentors or guest speakers.

Deering is one of three Maine schools to start ACE Mentoring Programs in the past year; the others are Hampden Academy and Bangor High School. The national program began in 1994. For more information, please visit www.acementor.org.

PAST PROJECT
Deering High School Clock Tower

                   Before                                          After

Thanks to the work of former Deering Alumni Board member and friend Rick Tomazin and the donations of many Alumni and others, the restoration of the Deering Clock Tower on top of the school is complete.  A dedication ceremony was held on June 4, 1999 on the front lawn of the school.  We are all proud to see the Clock Tower, symbolic of a quality education at Deering High School, restored to its original grandeur.

The Clock Tower is scheduled for a repainting the summer of 2008.
