Firefighter's Bravery Recognized With A Medal.
A graduate of Deering High School who is now a firefighter
in Charlotte, North Carolina has earned that city's highest
award for bravery.
Steven Richards, Class of
1987, a father of three and a former Air Force weapons
specialist, was recently awarded the Medal of Valor for
helping an elderly woman to safety despite nearby gunfire.
Richards and another
firefighter were called last year to assist a woman lying in
her front yard after being badly beaten. Her attacker
was shooting a rifle from inside the house. Richards
and his colleague dashed across the lawn, picked up the
woman and carried her to safety. Both escaped
uninjured and the woman survived.
Richard's parents, Lorraine
Burke Richards (DHS Class of 1956) and Robert Richards, who
live in the North Deering section of Portland, are naturally
very proud of their son. While growing up he never
indicated a desire to be a firefighter, they said.
Instead he wanted to be an archaeologist. The Richards
have four other children who also graduated from Deering.
The Alumni Association congratulates Steven and honors his
contributions to his community. [PPH]

Sports Round-Up for 2001-2002:
|
 |
Track: |
The 2001 Boys Indoor
Track Team won the Southwesterns for the first time
since 1975! The 2002 season brought more success
with a 2nd place finish in both the Southwesterns and
the States. The Girls 2001
Indoor Track Team won 3rd in the States. In 2002
the team improved their performance by winning 2nd in
the States.
It was the 2001 JV Cross Country
teams that came out on top with both the boys & Girls
teams winning 1st place at their S.M.A.A. meets.
Track Record Highlights: 2001
marked the first year that John Casavola's 1934
intermediate 40 yard dash record of 4.6 seconds was
even matched. It still has not been broken!
|
 |
Basketball: |
The 2001
Boys Basketball Team won the S.M.A.A. conference and
won the Western Maine championship for the first time
since the 1930's! The 2002 season was just as
exciting with another regional win.
Girls Basketball made it into the
quarter finals in 2001, playing at the Cumberland
County Civic Center for the first time in 14 years.
The 2002 team had a slow start but finished the season
strong.
|
 |
Swimming: |
The Boys
Swim Team took 3rd in the 2001 Southwesterns and did
it again in 2002! They finished 3rd in the
States in 2002, just ahead of Cheverus. Deering
swimmers have broken four DHS school records this
year. The Girls Swim Team
placed 2nd in the Southwesterns and won the Maine
Principals Associations' "Good Sportsmanship Award"
for the second year in a row. In 2002, they
repeated the success with a strong showing from the
Diving Team.

 |
Football: |
Deering's
2000 Football Team (7-4) had their best season in 20
years! Although we were unable to win the 90th
Annual Thanksgiving Day Game, the season was an
exciting one. The 2001
Football Team repeated success with another great
season (8-3) and we are looking forward to the
traditional game this November 2002.
Worth mentioning is the
grand-reopening of Fitzpatrick Stadium. At 80
years, the stadium got a facelift and is now
Portland's newest multi-purpose field.
|
 |
Soccer: |
The 2001
Varsity Boys Soccer Team allowed the fewest goals
scored by any team in their division in the regular
season and lost no games by more than one point.
Deering ended the regular season with the distinction
of being the only team to score against Cheverus.
Varsity Girls Soccer finished the 2001
season with a great 10-3-1 record. They lost in
the 2nd round of the playoffs in a 4 overtime, sudden
death game against McAuley. Exciting!

Reunion Notes:
Class of 1966 Reunion
by Stephen Bither '66
DHS Class of 1966 had it's
35th reunion on Oct. 5, 2001 in the State of Maine Ballroom
in the Eastland Park Hotel in Portland. The reunion
was the brainchild of Diane Smith Wood who had originally
planned a small gathering at her home. She generated
enough interest to require a larger space! Diane
gathered a crew of alumni to call classmates and sign them
up. About 80 class members and guests attended.
The reunion was held jointly
with Portland High's Class of 1966. We offered to
share the facility after learning that the PHS reunion
committee appeared unable to put their event together.
The invitation was offered in the spirit of unity that
prevailed after Sept. 11 ... and it was graciously accepted
by our PHS friends. Purple & white and blue & white
balloons decorated the room and we all had a great time.
Please send us a
write up on your reunion and a photo or two
so that we can include it here & in the newsletter! |
